Windows 98 32 Bit Color Virtualbox

  • Windows 98 was released to the public on June 25, 1998, the first release was known as the first edition, another update release was released on May 5, 1999 known as the Windows 98 Second Edition. The graphical user interface (icon, color scheme, etc.) of the operating system is similar to Windows 95, but there are many new things in GUI.
  • Installing Windows 95/98 on Windows 7, 8 and Windows 10 with VirtualBox. If compatibility mode doesn't work and you can't find a patch or source port, you'll have to use Windows 95/98 itself. As mentioned, a Windows 95/98 emulator does not exist. So you'll have to set up a Windows 95/98 system.

Hello everyone,
I missed the earlier post re Windows 9x 256 colours and as it's now closed I hope I'm not going against the forum rules
by creating this post to outline how to get True Color in Windows 98 running in Virtualbox.
It seems this can be done in Virtualbox by tweaking some settings to get the Guest Additions to install, but as I'm not
a tech the method outlined on the Virtualbox forum was way over my head, so I looked for an easier way.
I came across an app called Scitech Display Doctor, which was developed some time ago and has long been abandoned,
although there are still a few links around, such as the link https://scitechdd.wordpress.com/ which refers to the Windows 95 colors
(final) beta 7 version.
The DL links on this page are dead, but you can Google for a DL link, such as this ISO link:
https://drive.google.com/file/d/0BycgkM .. RycVE/view
I've installed this on Windows 98 in Virtualbox, and it does give a 32 bit True Color with various screen resolution options.
A pic of Windows 98 with Scitech installed and True Color is here:Windows 98 32 Bit Color Virtualbox

I found using the Scitech app to be the easiest option, and it gives a good result.
I expect this would also be the case for a HDD install, as well as a virtual install.
Just as a comment - I've also installed Windows 98 with Scitech and the Windows 98 Revolutions Pack version 9, and this
pack gives Windows 98 a kind of Vista look.

Not a bad looking thing at all.
The Revolutions Pack version 9 is still available on Softpedia:

The developer's page ( http://tihiy.ahanix.org/ ) seems to be long gone.
There are some tips on configuring the Revolutions Pack version 9 at:

The VBEMP 9x Universal VESA/VBE Video Display Driver for Windows 95/98/ME provides convenient support on modern hardware! This is probably the best universal display driver for Windows 9x because of lack of alternatives. Now, no Windows 9x dual-boot will be forced to be stuck on 16 colors and a limited resolution! However, the only drawback is driver lacks OpenGL and D3D support. So no hardware acceleration! But there should be no problems running DOSBox!
