Dark Forces was my favorite first-person shooter (FPS) for a long time. I still play it occasionally, and was upset about LucasArts not porting the first Jedi Knight game to Mac. You play as a rebel agent fighting against the Empire. The story takes a more focused approach than in typical shooters (this is a Lucas Arts game, after all), and as such you’ll be treated with cutscenes and actual mission objectives as you blast through the many missions. Goals range from finding the plans to the Death Star to freeing prisoners from Jabba or blowing up Imperial manufacturing plants. The ultimate aim is to seek out and destroy the Emperor’s latest weapon – the Dark Trooper.

There are fourteen levels in all, less than half the number of Doom II: Hell on Earth. But what they lack in numbers is more than made up with detail, size and variety. Each level will have a slightly distinctive tone and architecture, with structures that actually resemble Imperial installations and not just abstract pieces of geometry scattered everywhere. You navigate the corridors and the catwalks of different facilities and starships, with none of the places feeling like random mazes.

Each of the worlds also include different atmospheric effects. Red planets with their Martian-like rusty fog are juxtaposed with icy worlds. Steel fortresses give way to oozy sewers. Expect to see sights readily familiar to Star Wars fans as well – the Detention Center on one of the star destroyers is identical to that which held Princess Leia, right down to the trash compactor. On a more general note you’ll of course get to fight generic enemies from the movies all throughout – Imperial Officers, Stormtroopers, Gamorean Guards, Droids – with a rich assortment of weapons that range from your Blaster to an Assault Cannon.

The interface offers a smooth ride. A Heads-Up Display indicates your current armor, health and weapon status, with an optional Doom-style automap making navigation easy through the sector-based maps. Sound effects are crisp and clear, the digitized voices amazing, and the background music, while primitive, still manages to evoke that sense of Star Wars wonder. If there’s any one negative you can pin to this game, it’s the lack of multiplayer.

But with its fantastic and lengthy solo blast-a-thon, this hardly registers as but a minor dent in an otherwise lovely Star Wars gaming classic.

OpenJK is an effort by the JACoders group to maintain and improve the game engines on which the Jedi Academy (JA) and Jedi Outcast (JO) games run on, while maintaining full backwards compatibility with the existing games. This project does not attempt to rebalance or otherwise modify core gameplay.

Our aims are to:

  • Improve the stability of the engine by fixing bugs and improving performance.
  • Provide a clean base from which new JO and JA code modifications can be made.
  • Make available this engine to more operating systems. To date, we have ports on Linux and macOS.

Currently, the most stable portion of this project is the Jedi Academy multiplayer code, with the single player code in a reasonable state.

Rough support for Jedi Outcast single player is also available, however this should be considered heavily work in progress. This is not currently actively worked on or tested. OpenJK does not have Jedi Outcast multiplayer support.

For players

To install OpenJK, you will first need Jedi Academy installed. If you don't already own the game you can buy it from online stores such as Steam, Amazon or GOG.

Installing and running OpenJK:

  1. Download the latest build for your operating system.
  2. Extract the contents of the file into the Jedi Academy GameData/ folder. For Steam users, this will be in <Steam Folder>/steamapps/common/Jedi Academy/GameData.
  3. Run openjk.x86.exe (Windows), openjk.i386 (Linux 32-bit), openjk.x86_64 (Linux 64-bit) or the OpenJKapp bundle (macOS), depending on your operating system.

If you do not have a windows partition and need to download the game base.

  1. Download and Install SteamCMD SteamCMD .
  2. Set the download path using steamCMD, force_install_dir .
  3. Using SteamCMD Set the platform to windows to download any windows game on steam. @sSteamCmdForcePlatformType 'windows'
  4. Using SteamCMD download the game, app_update 6020.
  5. Download the latest build for your operating system. (might need to scroll down quite far)
  6. Extract the contents of the file into the Jedi Academy GameData/ folder. For Steam users, this will be in <Steam Folder>/steamapps/common/Jedi Academy/GameData.

macOS Instructions

If you have the Mac App Store Version of Jedi Academy, follow these steps to get OpenJK runnning under macOS:

  1. Install Homebrew if you don't have it.
  2. Open the Terminal app, and enter the command brew install sdl2.
  3. Extract the contents of the OpenJK DMG (Download the latest build - might have to scroll down far) into the game directory /Applications/Star Wars Jedi Knight: Jedi Academy.app/Contents/
  4. Run OpenJK.app or OpenJK SP.app
  5. Savegames, Config Files and Log Files are stored in /Users/<USER>/Library/Application Support/OpenJK/
  6. Follow this tutorial if you're still having issues.
